Other Books in Series
This is book number 17 in the Odense University Classical Studies series.
The Elder Pliny became the victim of his own scientific curiosity while studying the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. The year before he had completed his major work, the Naturalis Historia in which he set himself the ambitious goal of compiling all that was known about the world in his own time.
Pliny on Art and Society is the first complete examination of all Pliny's sections on art and of his reasons for dealing with art in the Naturalis Historia. The book has translations of all quotations from antiquity, proceeds systematically and is furnished with clear summaries. Thus it may be considered useful as a commentary on particular books and passages in Pliny's text.
