Description

Over the years in Indian agriculture, synergetic use of irrigation, seeds, and fertilizer has been the strategy of enhancing agricultural yield. Of these, the use of fertilizers has increased tremendously during the last 50 years - from just 0.1 million tonne to 17 million tonnes. But, this growth has mainly been confined to irrigated areas and not the non-irrigated areas, particularly in the tribal regions. Because of this, India seeks a new strategy of economic development that lays great emphasis on the necessity for technological changes in agriculture. Tribals and Modern Agriculture is diagnostic in nature and focuses on the economic forces that affect the adoption and diffusion process of fertilizer use in the southwestern tribal belt of Madhya Pradesh. By analyzing the growth in fertilizer use at the micro level, the book determines why fertilizers in the remote tribal areas are being used so inefficiently. It documents the experiences of farmers and the frequency of fertilizer use on crops. By examining fertilizer use in this way, it recognizes that 'farm condition,' rather than the 'farmer's condition,' is what constrains technology transfer in remote tribal areas.
