Only in retrospect did Felicity realize that walking in step with the villagers along mud banks that separated paddy fields in rural India and sitting at the local well for hours on end observing them - who were also observing her - was somewhat incongruous for a European child with light coloured eyes. As was being placed in an orphanage in Bombay (now Mumbai) at the age of one when her mother died. Felicity had an unusual way out. This story traces the stepping stones from the foundling home to stepping off a P&O ship in Sydney, Australia at age eighteen. The timeframe of the story is the from the mid-1930's to the mid-1950's, a time of great change as India transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation - the end of the "British Raj". The many stories surrounding the circumstances that influenced the stepping stones on Felicity's coming of age journey are told with a touch of retrospective pathos and humour.
